A Closer Look at Student Government

Regardless of what the administration tells you, morale in Ridge is obviously low. As with any major problem a scapegoat is searched for, and it seems the Student Government was found in this case. While the Student Government has the power to influence morale in the school, it can not change the attitude of the students. To the average observer it would appear that Student Government has done nothing, but it is necessary to look deeper.
What has Student Government done? Even most of the RDFA does not know. That is because only the traditional events occur (Homecoming, Prom, etc...). What about all those promises we heard in last year’s election? Let’s think about the administration in this school, how easy do you think it would be
to change things in an administration that fears change second only to public opinion?
Maybe before looking at others' faults, we should look at our own. The administration knows that the Student Government does not have backing from the Student Body. The power of a government lies in its supporters. Without us . . . they are weak.

Their Responsibility

There are forty members in the student government, one could expect that they have an understanding of what the average ridge student is concerned about. Due to this fact Student Government officers should work toward resolving these issues. If the Student Government is unaware of the average students’ concerns, they should make themselves aware by simply talking to groups of students.           Ideally, this is the way a Student Government should work; a blend between the students and the Student Government with the incentive to find and make new ideas active emanating from the Student Government. The RDFA endorses candidates who agree with this philosophy.
As with all the beliefs of the RDFA, this belief is as optimistic as possible with a
understanding of what the real world is like.

Note:
We were fortunate enough to catch the president after a Student Government meeting in one of his rare irate moods. We received the following quote from him, "I’m getting sick of people who get into Student Government just so they look good to colleges and they don’t do anything!"
